  • Poverty Impact: Nearly 18% of Atlanta residents live below the federal poverty level, with child poverty rates in Atlanta Public Schools reaching approximately 26%.

  • Trauma & Stress: Students in marginalized and high-poverty areas of Atlanta face increased exposure to economic hardship and community instability, contributing to trauma and barriers to academic engagement.

  • Digital Divide: Over 12,000 Atlanta students lack reliable home internet access, limiting their ability to complete schoolwork and participate fully in learning.

  • Family Economic Strain: Many parents and caregivers work multiple jobs or long hours, reducing the time and resources available to support their children’s academic needs.

  • Single-Parent Households: About 38% of Atlanta children live in single-parent families, where poverty rates—particularly among single mothers—are significantly higher.

  • Unequal Course Access: High-poverty schools in Atlanta and across Georgia often offer fewer AP and advanced STEM courses and have less access to experienced, fully credentialed teachers.

  • Funding Inequities: Georgia’s school funding relies heavily on local property taxes, leaving lower-wealth districts with fewer educational resources.

  • Outdated Formula: The state’s Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding formula, created in 1985, has not kept pace with modern educational costs or student needs.

  • Limited Student Supports: High-poverty schools have less access to counselors, mental health professionals, updated materials, and personal technology.

  • No Poverty Weight: Georgia does not include a targeted poverty factor in its funding formula, limiting schools’ ability to address the added needs of students living in poverty.
